Do you work as a painter and decorator in the South Hams?

I'm a painter and decorator covering the South Hams from my base in Plymouth, including Ivybridge, Kingsbridge, Salcombe and Dartmouth. I decorate homes and businesses, inside and out, with colour and design advice from the first visit and a free, no-obligation quote once I've seen the job.

The work ranges from period homes to family homes and new builds, and from single rooms to whole houses. For shops, offices and hospitality businesses, I plan the work around opening hours, and out-of-hours work is possible.

What did the Kingsbridge decorating project involve?

In Kingsbridge, I decorated a whole home throughout using mainly Farrow & Ball colours. Strong White, a warm, grey-based white, was the base, with Sulking Room Pink, School House White, Pigeon, Shaded White and Green Smoke through the rest of the house.

The entrance porch was painted entirely in Strong White (cabinetry, walls, ceiling and door), and some kitchen walls were colour matched to the units so they looked built in. You can see more on my recent projects page.

How does salt air affect exterior paint on the South Hams coast?

Homes near the coast take more punishment than most. Salt carried on the wind settles on walls, windows and woodwork and draws in moisture, wind-driven rain finds any gap, and sea mist can keep surfaces damp for days. Paint tends to fail first where preparation was rushed or moisture was trapped underneath.

My general advice for coastal exteriors: wash surfaces down to remove salt and dirt, repair cracks and bare timber, let everything dry properly, and wait for a settled run of dry weather before painting. Use exterior paints made for masonry or timber, and check them each year, as small touch-ups prevent bigger repairs. There's more on my exterior house painting page.

What kinds of South Hams homes do you decorate?

Much of the South Hams is older housing, from stone cottages in the villages to Victorian and Edwardian town houses, and many properties along the coast are holiday homes or second homes. Older homes often have uneven plaster, years of paint layers and original features worth keeping, so they need patient preparation.

I decorate period homes and family homes across the area, and I'm always happy to talk through what suits an older property, from the colour to the finish on the woodwork. That's where colour and design advice earns its place.

WHAT CUSTOMERS SAY

"The finished paint job is excellent, from the choice of colour (Danny's recommendation) to the fine detailing of the period features."

QUESTIONS

Which South Hams towns does Daniel Riley cover?

Daniel Riley covers the South Hams from his base in Plymouth, including Ivybridge, Kingsbridge, Salcombe and Dartmouth. Customers in nearby villages are welcome to get in touch to check, and every quote is free and comes after a visit.

When is the best time to paint a house exterior in the South Hams?

The best time to paint a house exterior in the South Hams is during a settled spell of dry, mild weather, usually from late spring to early autumn. Exterior paint needs dry surfaces and time to cure, so rain, sea mist or cold nights soon after painting can spoil the finish.

Does salt air damage exterior paint on coastal homes?

Salt air can shorten the life of exterior paint on coastal homes, because salt settles on surfaces, attracts moisture and works into weak spots. Washing down walls and woodwork, repairing cracks and using good exterior paints gives a coastal exterior the best chance of lasting.

Does Daniel Riley decorate period homes in the South Hams?

Daniel Riley decorates period homes and family homes across the South Hams, including a whole home in Kingsbridge decorated throughout in mainly Farrow & Ball colours. Colour and design advice from the first visit helps make the most of original features in older homes.
